Smart Problem:

People pollute bottlenose dolphin's habitat because they don't have environmental education.

Possible Action Plan:

Educate people in the EC-K building by putting in a school program that is against pollution in the ocean and teaches children to stop polluting the ocean; so there can be a greater population of dolphins and we can have a strong marine cycle.

Rafaela – Bottlenose Dolphins

1.What form of ocean pollution affects bottle nosed dolphins more? How? (Alex)
Mineral exploration is when people use machines that deliver high frequency sound waves that bounce in the ocean floor to find minerals or sometimes the layers of the ocean that have different temperatures and densities that reflect the sound and makes the high frequency expand around the ocean. It affects dolphins by making them deaf or it can make dolphins die.

Although bottle nosed dolphins are mostly affected by mineral exploration they are also affected by oil spills and plastic bags that can cause major damage to the dolphins. Plastic get to the ocean because people throw trash to the ocean because the didn’t or they don’t have environmental education, bottle nosed dolphins eat the plastic because they think it’s food. Plastics affect dolphins by making them choke which leads to the bottle nosed dolphins death. There is also Oil and its by-products like gasoline, kerosene and some cosmetics that give dolphins diseases like cancer in the liver or lungs it also affects dolphins by deforming them or making them ill. Heavy metals like lead, mercury and cadmium also gives dolphins cancer in their stomach, liver, lungs.

2. WHY IS THE POPULATION OF BOTTLENOSE DOLPHINS DECREASING IN PERU? (Vasco)

THE POPULATION OF BOTTLENOSE DOLPHINS IN PERU IS MAINLY DECREASING BECAUSE OF OIL EXPLORATION AND DRILLING IN THE REGION SAID CARLOS YAIPEN WITH ORCA AN ORGANIZATION THAT FOCUSES ON HELPING MARINE ANIMALS. AFTER THE MASS OF BOTTLENOSE DOLPHINS DEATH DUE TO THE 6.3 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE IN ICA ON FEBRUARY 11TH ,THESE DOLPHINS WERE CONSUMING VERTICAL SHOCKS THAT ENTERED NEAR THE COAST.

AS MANY 615 DEAD DOLPHINS DIED ON A 90-MILE STRETCH OF THE BEACHES NEAR THE CITY OF LAMBAYEQUE OF PERU IN A SINGLE DAY LAST WEEK ON 15th APRIL 2012.
HOWEVER, SCIENTISTS THINK THAT SO MANY DEATHS COULD BE DUE TO SOME SORT OF DISEASES. MAINLY DOLPHINS NEAR THE PERUVIAN COAST ARE DYING DUE TO LACK OF EDUCATION IN LAMBAYEQUE, THAT IS WHY THIS DOLPHINS ARE GETTING THIS DISEASES BECAUSE PEOPLE DON'T HAVE EDUCATION AND JUST THROW THEIR TRASH TO THE OCEAN.

MARINE ANIMALS BYCATCH IS THE MOST COMMON CAPTURE OF MARINE SPECIES BY FISHERIES SPECIES WHICH ARE MOSTLY AFFECTED BY THIS ISSUE, THIS ISSUE INCLUDES DOLPHINS AND ALL OTHER SPECIES. BYCATCH ALSO CAN BE USED FOR ENLARGEMENT IN FISHING NETS AND LINES, OR DIRECT CAPTURES IN HOOKS OR IN NETS.

THIS ISSUE HAS CHANGED BETWEEN TIME, BECAUSE IN THE PAST THEIR WASN'T ENOUGH TECHNOLOGY, AND PETROLEUM WASN'T THAT IMPORTANT AS NOW. BUT NOW THAT WE HAVE ALL THIS TECHNOLOGY PEOPLE THAT TRANSPORT PETROLEUM BY CARGO BOATS, MAKE THE OCEAN POLLUTED, AND HOWEVER IF 1 LITER OF OIL IS THROWN INTO THE OCEAN AND CAUSES 1 MILLION LITERS OF WATER TO BE POLLUTED, IMAGINE IF THEIR IS AN OIL SPILL HOW MANY LITERS OF WATER BECOMES POLLUTED AND HOW MANY ANIMALS ARE KILLED. THIS IS A REALLY MAIN PROBLEM THAT KILLS THE BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN SPECIE.

3.How do the deaths of bottlenose dolphins affects people's life? (Vasco)

THE BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN IS THE ONE SPECIES OF SMALL CETACEAN FOR WHICH THE MOST HUMAN INTERACTION HAS BEEN OBSERVED. IN MANY CASES, DOLPHINS ACTUALLY ALLOW SWIMMERS TO PLAY AND SWIM WITH THEM. IN ONE EXTRAORDINARY CASE, A VERY MISCHIEVOUS DOLPHIN NAMED BEAKY OFF THE COAST OF WALES ACTUALLY LIFTED A BOAT'S ANCHOR, TOWING THE BOAT AWAY WITH IT, AND EVEN ONCE THEY ATTACKED A SWIMMER AT THE BEACH HITTING HIM REALLY HARD.

THESE DOLPHIN'S BEHAVIORS WERE PROBABLY JUST A SOCIAL OUTCAST, SINCE THEY ARE KNOWN TO LIKE PEOPLE INTERACTION A LOT. BOTTLENOSE DOLPHINS SOMETIMES ALLOW HUMANS TO PLAY WITH THEM, OR EVEN RIDE THEM. PLAYING WITH THEM CAN BE DANGEROUS IN MANY RARE CASES. A BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN CAN TAKE A HUMAN OUT TO SEA AND NOT LET HIM BACK TO LAND UNTIL HE IS TOO TIRED TO SWIM. IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT DOLPHINS ARE NOT HUMANS, AND THEY CANNOT BE ASSIGNED HUMAN QUALITIES. THEY BEHAVE IN WAYS WE DO NOT, AND MIGHT NEVER UNDERSTAND. THEY ARE WILD

4.What is the connection between the deaths of bottle nosed dolphins and other animals?
The deaths between bottle nosed dolphins and other species are connected because there have been die offs of dolphins and other marine species. Those deaths are also connected by the consequences they have such as the ocean becoming inhabited, food chains breaking because if bottle nosed dolphins become extinct their predators too and that’s how the food chains break and how the ocean can become inhabited.

There are many connections between the deaths of bottle nosed dolphins and other animals; the connections can be causes or consequences. The causes are that they are killed by human products like: plastic bags/containers, sunscreen that are not eco friendly and human wastes like: toxic wastes, sewer wastes or human interaction like dolphins getting stuck on fishing nets and fishermen shooting at them. The consequences are that the ocean becomes unhabited, the marine ecosystem will get worse, many food chains will brake and everything is like a puzzle if you take out one piece the entire puzzle will break.

5. Why are bottlenose dolphins so important? (Causation)

Bottlenose dolphins are important for their intelligence. They are the 2nd most intelligent animal in the world following the humans. They are well known for their friendship with humans, that’s why sometimes they get in nets. An example where a specific bottlenose dolphin has been caught in a net and has been really kind with humans is Winter (made into movie).

The dolphin´s intelligence is important to humans for these reasons: they can save a human when he/she is sinking, they can help children who are autistic because they express all their feelings when they swim with them, they can help children who are sick (one of the most common illness is cancer), they can also help disabled people (blind, death, etc.). Dolphins find it very natural and easy to help these people because they are very patient and kind. Trainers think it is very easy to train these dolphins because they can follow almost every order with the brilliant brain that they have. When the bottlenose dolphins are born they have ½ the intelligence of humans.

It is believed that dolphins use the 2 hemispheres of their brain in different ways when they sleep. This means that in ½ of their sleep they rest one hemisphere and keep the other hemisphere alert for enemies. Then in the other ½ of their sleep they use the 2nd hemisphere to rest and the 1st hemisphere to be alert for enemies. When bottlenose dolphins are stranded on the beaches, they alert humans that the ocean is sick.

To summarize this question I can say that bottlenose dolphins are very important for many reasons like helping sick people, helping humans express their feeling by swimming with them, also because they are always alert for their enemies, and for much more reasons. Dolphins depend on us; if the dolphins become extinct our marine cycle would be a disaster it is like a puzzle: if you take out a piece, the entire puzzle is destroyed. TAKE CARE!!!!!

6. What do people think about bottlenose dolphins? (Perspective)//

Most people in FDR like dolphins. They are aware that ocean pollution really affects them and their habitat. When I asked the children if they knew the situation of the dolphins now in Peru, most of them said that they did know because it was on the news. Many kids said that they wanted to take action and make the dolphins happier and healthier. What is happening now in Peru is that there is a virus that is killing many dolphins and sea lions. To conclude this text I can say that many children in FDR know about the problem of the dolphin’s and they want to take action.

I have also asked about this to my parents and my brothers. They are very sad about what is happening as well as many people, including me. Some children also said that they would love to swim with dolphins. My group wasn’t sure of what which smart problem we could create. We chose the bottlenose dolphin’s idea because we loved this animal and we thought it was unfair for this animal to have a polluted habitat. To say what people think in other countries, people in japan always choose 1 day to go to the beach and kill the dolphins. To summarize this paragraph I can say that people have many different points of view about dolphins and that many of them would want to take action.

7. What is our responsibility in taking care of the bottlenose dolphin's habitats? (Santiago)
Humans’ responsibility in taking care of bottlenose dolphins’ habitats is to first recognize the problem and then think of ways to solve it. In this case the main problem that kills bottlenose dolphins is oil exploration. People, when they extract oil from the land at the bottom of the ocean, they don’t think that they are making any damage to the creatures living in the sea. What people have to do to safe the dolphins living in the ocean is that hey have to find another way to extract oil from the bottom of the ocean.

Possible solution:

Send scuba divers to investigate and extract the oil from the bottom of the ocean.

8.What can we do to educate people that pollute the bottlenose dolphin's habitats? (Santiago)

We are going to make a program showing the causes and consequences of ocean pollution and what happens with bottlenose dolphins (flow chart). We are going to show this to the students in the EC-K building and teach the teachers how to teach the students, using our action plan. Through a survey that we made to the EC kids, asking what they thought about bottlenose dolphins, we found out that the EC kids did not know what was happening with the dolphins in Lima. So, my group and I decided to do our action plan with the EC kids.

We are going to follow these steps to teach them about ocean pollution and what happens to the bottlenose dolphins:

Step 1:
We are going to present our Theme, Central Idea, our Lines of Inquiry, and our Student Concept Based Questions.

Step 2:
We are going to tell the EC kids what is the problem with the bottlenose dolphins, and tell them what do they think.

Step 3:
We are going to make a Power Point about what is happening with the ocean and the animals living in it.

Step 4:
We are going to show a play about what is the people’s responsibility in taking care of the ocean and then, we are going to show our song about solving ocean pollution.

Step 5:
Ask the kids questions to see if they understood the presentation.
